What Causes Poor Indoor Air Quality Problems?
Homes can contain numerous contaminants that include mold, dust, bacteria, chemicals and other particles that can be inhaled causing respiratory and other health problems. And there are a many different reasons why. Close proximity to construction sites and major roadways, the presence of pets or smokers in your home, and even the overall cleanliness of your home can all impact the quality of the air. Because so many potential issues can affect your indoor air quality, it’s important to trust a professional air quality technician to determine the best approach to resolving those problems.
Ways to Improve Indoor Air Quality
The correct approach to improving your indoor air quality depends on what specific problems you have. In general the most effective solutions incorporate a variety of methods and products, as the causes rarely pinpoint a single source of contamination.
UV Germicidal Lights: UV germicidal lights are devices which are installed directly into your air ducts, generally near the air handler in your HVAC system. They emit small, safe amounts of UV radiation in order to destroy the biological pollutants within your air ducts, rendering them incapable of reproduction.
Air Cleaners: Among the most cost effective solutions is a high MERV rated air filter. MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, and denotes how efficiently the air filter traps pollutants. Installed directly into your HVAC system – instead of the standard “low MERV” filter that comes with your system- it captures the harmful pollutants as the air passes through it.
Electronic Air Purifiers: Installed in your HVAC system, electronic air purifiers ionize the pollutants in the air. Particles are electrically charged, then trapped on a collector plate, which is cleaned periodically. Other models give the pollutants a static charge prior to air being distributed back in the home, where the particles attach to the walls and surfaces in your house.
Humidifiers and Dehumidifiers: You may have used a humidifier or dehumidifier before, but likely a portable model. A whole house humidifier or dehumidifier can even out humidity levels throughout your entire home. If very dry or moist air is the cause of poor indoor air quality, a humidifier or dehumidifier will help.
